Sustainability

We see protecting and enhancing the physical environment as being an important part of the naturist way of life. The saying "Think globally, Act locally" makes a lot of sense. The following are the specific things we do to protect the New Zealand environment consistent with maintaining a high quality of service to our guests.

We have two recycling points for solid waste on our grounds and we take the sorted material to the Katikati recycling centre. Fruit and vegetable scraps are composted on-site.

As we have a river on one boundary which we wish to protect we have installed a high quality sewage treatment system the final stage of which is an irrigation system that disposes of the treated effluent to a grassed area.

Virtually all services in the Park are run by electricity. To reduce usage we have installed low energy long-life light bulbs or tubes where practical. We encourage guests to turn off electrical devices when they are not being used. For longer term guests we charge them individually for electricity used. Our accommodation buildings are well insulated.

The three groups of potentially toxic chemicals we use and how we minimise their impact are:

  • Swimming pool sanitisers; We have automatic dosing systems on both spas and the swimming pool, and these, in conjunction with strict control of water conditions means that we only use sufficient chlorine to maintain the water in the best sanitary condition.
  • Herbicides: Wherever possible we use mechanical means to control weed growth. Where this is not feasible we reduce the use of herbicide as much as possible by doing spot spraying with a knapsack sprayer. For example, each year we spray the lawn areas for Onehunga Weed, a very prickly uncomfortable weed to walk on. By using a knapsack we use only one third of the spray concentrate a boom sprayer would use.
  • Cleaning chemicals: We do not spray chemicals around massively. Instead we apply them by hand in small quantities.

We do not apply fertiliser to the lawn areas. Simply not collecting the lawn clippings means that the nutrients are returned to the soil. As much as possible we apply natural fertilisers such as horse manure and blood and bone to the gardens.

In establishing the Park we have planted thousands of trees and as already noted we try to reduce energy use as much as possible
